Student Name: Elaina Tipner School: Oswego East High School Grade: 10th Class: Pottery 1 UN Sustainable Development Goal: Life Under Water Brief Artist Statement: The main idea of my artwork is that the oceans are being polluted. The ocean has been one of my favorite things since I was a small girl. To think there is an entire other life just below the surface of the water is crazy. But people are destroying it. I want people to clean up after themselves at the beach. And if there is loose garbage to pick that up too. If you don’t live by the beach but still want to help you can donate to organizations that go and clean the beach. The ocean isn't going to stay healthy and beautiful if it is only full of garbage. I put two water bottles floating around because they are the third most common pieces of garbage in the ocean. The boat has a fishing rod coming down to represent how much of the ocean creatures we are taking away. It offsets the ecosystem and makes it harder for them to fight off different kinds of pollution. The boat also has an oil spill under it. Many plants and boats have had oil spills and they have resulted in entire species going or almost going extinct. In the bottom left there is a plastic can ring holder. Plastic is the second most common type of garbage in the ocean. They can get caught on anything and any organism. Lastly there is a barrel that had hazardous liquids in it. Not only does it contaminate the water it also leaves the metal in the water which can harm more animals.
